FURNITURE DESIGN
REPRIEVAL
An exploration of psychedelia and self.
PROJECT INFO:
I felt stuck for much of my 20s; trapped in undesirable situations by society, culture, and myself. This chair represents finding a way out of those constrictions. The material, a single plane of ombre glass, exemplifies immateriality: how one is shaped from the past despite whatever is endured. The chair escapes from a dark and constricted state into a lighter an open form, signifying the journey of feeling captive to letting go.
I examined my struggles with identity from forces of adversity. In this design, I was also influenced by the psychedelic concept of ego-death, or the loss of subjective self-indetity. I used constriction as a form for feeling trapped and the release of that constriction as a metaphor for self-liberation. As the form transitions, as do the colors, symbolizing an evolution of self.
