SAFE-EDGE LID
A removable lid for pressurised containers that carries the sharp edge away with the
cover — solved as one continuous geometry rather than an added part.
PROBLEM:
A pull-off lid solves one problem and creates another. The instant the seal separates there are two torn metal edges in play: one on the disc now in the user's hand, and a matching one left on the container. Neither is designed — both are simply what's left over once the opening works. Everyone in packaging knows how to fix it, which is exactly why nothing ships: the obvious answer is to add a guard, and in a category costing fractions of a cent per unit, adding a part is the thing that kills a solution. So the design problem was never invent a shield. It was: make the shield something the lid already had to be.
APPROACH:
The safety cover sits over the sealed plate and is bonded to it, so the two leave the container together and the user's grip is on moulded plastic while the metal rides along as a passenger. The working part is the cover's outer edge. Instead of flaring away from the container — the easier moulding choice — the overhang runs continuously downward and inward, roughly twenty to forty-five degrees off vertical, from the outer edge of the top surface to the container's rim. That single reversal is the whole invention. Because the cover's top surface is wider than the opening, the inward wall lands outboard of the plate's edge all the way around, which means that at the instant the plate separates along its pressing seam, the overhang is already covering the edge it needs to shield. Nothing has to deform, snap, or be positioned by the user. The remaining decisions follow from that one: a keyhole cut-out offset toward the rim so the tab pulls where the seam wants to release, an epoxy bond making cover and plate a single object, and a soft cover against a hard plate so the material meeting the hand is the compliant one.
OUTCOME:
Filed as a U.S. utility application and prosecuted through examination against three cited references, with the independent claims amended to recite the continuous inward overhang alongside the pressurised seal and the tab pull. More useful than the filing: examination turned out to be a design critique with a paper trail. Defending the design meant stating precisely why the geometry isn't interchangeable with the alternatives — why a wall angled outward and held by a tensioned band arrives somewhere else by a different route — which is a sharper test of an idea than any crit I've sat in.
